ASSIGNMENT 3: SCHEMATIC DESIGN
Due:
Part 3.1:  Jan.26
Part 3.2:  Feb.2
Part 3.3:  Feb.9
MID TERM:  Feb.18

During the next four weeks we will define the program and schematic design of each project.
We will explore and apply some of the insights we gained in the first week’s reading and observations on the Capitalistic Metropolis, Miami, and the Beach.

The history of Miami Beach has been related to the history of leisure and entertainment in this century.  The concentration of spectacle and commercialization in Miami Beach has taken in the last decade a reinvented version of Main Street America in Ocean Drive, Lincoln Rd., and Washington Av.  However, more sophisticated pressures for entertainment, transportation, and safety are rapidly pushing South Beach into more complex briefs that will produce infrastructures that have more hybrid superimposition of functions and spectacles in vertical section.  During the next four weeks we will explore projects that will develop more advanced ideas about the vertical section of Miami Beach infrastructure in the next century.

Part 3.1:  Jan.26
During this week you will define your project, site, and program.  We will request the following:
- 3 or more study models at 1” = 100’ (use a 11” x 17” xerox as your base model)
- 3 or more mass-study electronic models to be displayed in VR software from superscape.
With Superscape we will create very schematic models in which we will interacted in real time.  The use of this VR software will help evaluate not only our ideas but also how the site and building will be used.
- Schematic program
- Study drawings and Elevations: schematic plans, elevations, sections, and perspectives (area drawings drawn by hand and / or computer)
- Optional: Schematic photoshop montage or collage of project on the site.
Presentation:  Each student will pin up models and drawings and present their electronic work by using a computer projector.

Part 3.2: Feb. 2
- 2 study model at 1” = 50’
- Finalize program
- Study drawings and Elevations: schematic plans, elevations, sections, and perspectives (area drawings drawn by hand and / or computer)
- Schematic Photoshop montage or collage of project on the site.
Presentation:  Each student will pin up models and drawings and present their electronic work by using a computer projector.

Part 3.3:  Feb.9
- 2 Sections, plans and Elevations (computer drawn).
- Progress work of digital and 1/16” = 1’ real model for mid-term.
Presentation:  Each student will pin up models and drawings and present their electronic work by using a computer projector.

MID TERM:  Feb.18
- 1 Schematic model at 1/16” = 1’.
- Handout with program.
- Schematic drawings: Sections, plans and elevations.
- Schematic wire-frame and render images.
- Schematic Photoshop montage and collages.
- VHS tape with VR analysis of building use and site development (you can use VR- Superscape model or doing video shoots directly from your 1/16" = 1' model).
Presentation: we expect that by midterm all the major issues of the building design are resolved (issues such as circulation, parking, function relationships, etc.).
Each student will pin up models and drawings and present their electronic work by using a computer projector.
